Declaration of Holiday for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti 2025

1. Introduction

The Office Memorandum (OM) No.12/4/2020-JCA2, issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions (DoPT) on 27th March 2025, declares 14th April 2025 (Monday) as a public holiday across all Central Government Offices and Industrial Establishments in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

• Constitutional Bodies: UPSC, CVC, C&AG, Election Commission, etc.
• Judiciary: Supreme Court, High Courts, CAT
• Commissions: NCSC, NCST, NCM, NHRC, NCW
• RBI, Parliament Secretariats, PMO, Cabinet Secretariat
• Central Government Welfare Committees & Staff Side (JCM)

3. Significance of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti

• Constitutional Architect: Dr. Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice, equality, and Dalit rights.
• National Observance: Recognized as a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
• Global Tribute: UNESCO commemorates his birth anniversary as "Equality Day".

• State Governments: While this OM applies to Central offices, states may issue separate notifications.
• Private Sector: Not mandated but many organizations observe the holiday.
• Bank Holidays: RBI is notified; banks may remain closed (subject to state-wise circulars).
