A massive scam has been uncovered in government post offices in Gujarat, involving the misappropriation of public funds. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on 19 post offices across areas such as Gondal, Jamnagar, Ravalwadi, and Chotila, and discovered cases of government fund misuse.
Several FIRs have been registered with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The scam involved sub-postmasters fraudulently re-opening closed recurring deposit accounts and misappropriating ₹18.60 crore.
In one instance, the sub-postmaster of the Mengni Sub Post Office in Gondal Division embezzled ₹9.97 crore between October 16, 2019, and November 21, 2022, by manipulating government software. Similar fraudulent activities were reported in Ravalwadi Post Office, where closed recurring accounts were re-opened with fabricated forms, and in Surajkuji Post Office, where the sub-postmaster used forged documents to defraud the government of ₹2.94 crore.
The scam's scale is massive, with the involvement of many other postal officers coming to light. The investigation is ongoing, and the full extent of the scam is yet to be uncovered.
