Filling up of vacancies is one of their main demands
The postal employees struck work in various post offices across the district on Wednesday pressing for a charter of demands to be fulfilled by the Central government.
The postal services were affected as many postal staff joined the one-day token strike called by the National Federation of Postal Employees.
There were several vacancies in the Department of Posts and the government should fill such vacancies at the earliest, they said.
They stressed the need for payment of revised wages and arrears to casual, part-time, contingent employees and daily rated mazdoors as per the 6th and the 7th Pay Commission and settle other issues faced by the casual workers.
The move to privatise the post offices and outsourcing it should be scrapped. The government should withdraw the contributory pension scheme and reinstate the old pension scheme and guarantee 50 % of the last pay drawn as minimum pension.
More importantly, five days of work a week should be implemented to reduce burden of employees. Around 200 employees from three head post offices, 77 sub-post offices and 205 branch post offices took part in the strike
